With dried raffia balanced gracefully on her head, a woman in blue Ankara walks with quiet strength and pride. Her presence tells the story of Another Nigeria one defined by resilience, resourcefulness, and rhythm in everyday life. Each step reflects balance between tradition and progress, reminding us that beauty here is not performed, but lived.

What She Carries

The Hausa Boy was the first photograph I ever took with my own camera. It was a quiet beginning etched in monochrome. He sits still, gaze steady and unflinching, as though aware that this moment would outlive both of us. There’s something timeless in his stare. A kind of knowing innocence and every shade of grey carries the tenderness of a first encounter between a boy and the birth of a photographer’s eye.

To imagine a new Nigeria is to look at the bright side of our communities and repurpose them for a better future.  For this series I used the slum community and its young people as my case study. The slums and ghetto communities have an abundance of young talented people who are arguably an integral part of the country and its future. Despite the limitations placed on the young people from these communities, the energy of these young people never fails to prevail. The will to improve themselves and their communities which in turn impact the country as a whole. In 2019, I set out to two popular slum communities in Lagos called Oko Agbon and Makoko in Lagos Nigeria. These communities are at the centre of Lagos Nigeria and it was there that I created these images. Together with these talented young people, we projected new possibilities in the neighbourhoods looking at the bright side from the angle of Technology, education, music and modelling for good in connection to their existing way of life in the slum and the urban space. The flip side of this series highlights how importance High standard of living, low poverty rate and unemployment, high human development and technological advancement can transform our current Nigeria to another Nigeria.
