In Benue State, Nigeria, this farmer crosses a contaminated river every day to reach her farm, her only source of livelihood. The water is poisoned by chemical waste from a nearby industry that has long used the river as its dumping ground. Complaints have been made to local rulers, but nothing has changed. The community continues to live with the danger that flows through their only source of water. For her, this crossing isn’t a choice; it’s survival. Her home lies on one side of the village; her farm, on the other. What I saw as a crisis, she has accepted as her daily reality. This image captures her return from the farm, carefully stepping through polluted water, a scene that repeats itself every day, through every season, in quiet defiance of a system that looks away.

As the first light spills over the Lagos Lagoon, the water becomes a mirror between night and day. The rising sun paints stories of renewal across the surface, hinting at both peace and persistence. In this quiet moment, the city’s heartbeat softens, and the horizon feels like a promise whispered in gold.

I captured this anachronistic scene on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and deliberately styled it to feel like a lost photograph from another era—a myth for our time. The title, "A New World, An Old Power," speaks to the powerful fusion at the heart of the image. Here, a modern man, the architect of a new world, is propelled by the raw, timeless energy of an old power—the horse. This image challenges our linear idea of progress. It suggests the future isn't about discarding our heritage, but about finding innovative ways to integrate it. The strength of the past becomes the engine for the road ahead. This rider is a 21st-century pioneer, demonstrating that true innovation lies in this synthesis. A new world is possible not when we erase what came before, but when we have the vision to ride it boldly into the future.
